AGORAPHOBIA AND EMPATHY

Are you an empathetic agoraphobic? The word empathy means the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Agoraphobics are always screaming how nobody understands them and can't know what they are going through on a daily basis. We bemoan the fact that we live in a world where no one can relate to our problems, not our husbands or wife and certainly not our doctors. Now I agree that all of this is true but have you ever turned the tables and said I don't understand or have empathy with how they see me or are hurt by my behavior towards them or situations.
They can't understand what we are going through and rightly so. Agoraphobia is so debilitating that we can't even understand it. But does that make this ok? I don't think so!
Agoraphobics need a big dose of their own criticism. We want to be understood by other people but we sure don't want to do the understanding. Shame on us. It's time to change. It's time to look at those non- agoraphobics and cut them some slack. Try and look at yourself the way they look at you. They don't understand you they want to be your friend. They want to hang out with you, is there something wrong with that?  Be it husband, relative, friend, lover or child. We need to turn the tables on ourselves and ask how can I can show love to people instead of expecting them to show love and understand to me not knowing my condition like I know it.
The answer is within you. Look for it. Start with the one closest to you. Tell them how much you care about them and want them to be happy. Tell them you are sorry you can't do the things they want you to do and wish with all your heart you could be different. Maybe you could strike a compromise. Showing unconditional love to someone can only be a good thing and make your life a little better. Try looking out side of yourself for a change instead of looking in and seeing only miserable me and no body cares. Sometimes it's not all about you.
